Storytelling As an Emerging Technology To Be More Widely Explored

Storytelling as a technology for teaching, learning, counselling and even marketing has gained a wide popularity in education, psychology and business management.

Yet, at PATME 2018, the very first issue of ICPATME – International Conference on Pedagogical Advances in Education which was held in Istanbul, the conference keynote Dr. Antonio Reis (Portugal) was discussing an urge to introduce alternative teaching methods which would be more appealing to the modern generation on the one hand, and embrace technological potential of ICT for multidimensionality, mobility, flexibility and expressiveness.  Among them, the storytelling was highlighted as one of the most dynamic and influential educational technologies of nowadays.

It was stressed that during centuries, humankind used stories to communicate, motivate and transmit information and knowledge, transfer meanings and ideas.

However, today, in the 21st century, this skill was lost giving its place to linear academic and formal texts which have little to do with vividness and inspiration.

Dr. Antonio Reis (Portugal) stressed that education lost the art and the skills of storytelling. The majority of teachers and instructors are unable to convey meanings and senses in a vivid way, using images and metaphors.

To revitalise this skill, ICT are of absolute help considering their wide spectrum of multimedia features, accessibility and easiness to use and manipulate for creating new contents.

Taking into account the fact, that our students are digital learners, educators should revolutionise their approaches of teaching being empowered by the skills to tell stories, present contents in a vivid and expressive way, turn to metaphoric language and a language of poetry, to express feelings, ideas and messages through the usage of images realised through technologies.

In this sense, it is crucial to learn how to use digital multimedia formats of communication using storytelling techniques in our daily lives, at work, in our classrooms for creating more dynamic and expressive contents which can be used in face-to-face settings as well as in online environments.

Storytelling is able to convert complicated ideas into appealing, synthetic and persuasive messages, to be presented in any settings, in traditional or digital formats, synchronously or on request.

Storytelling is not questioning what is possible. Storytelling is challenging the impossible.

A deep reflection about this subject is absolutely necessary now moreover with the potential of AI technologies which have already penetrated in all spheres of our life.

Digital technologies in storytelling, AI in education for developing new contents and reaching a better quality in learning and other related topics of our next conference of ICPATME 2025, which is going to be held in collaboration with Curtin University (Australia), one of the leading institutions of the world.
